The historical origins of Castello Vicchiomaggio can be traced back to the 5th century. The present owners, the Matta family, acquired the property in 1964 and restored it back to its former splendour. The estate, with 150 ha, is one of the largest in the area, and of these, 32 ha are dedicated to the vine. Castello Vicchiomaggio produces several styles of wine, from the traditional to the innovative. Vicchiomaggio is consistently classified amongst Italy’s top estates and John Matta has been named IWSC Italian Winemaker of the Year four times in the last 14 years.

Viticulture:  Cordon

Vinification: The grapes were carefully sorted and de-stemmed. After 3 weeks maceration in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, malolactic fermentation took place in 1 year old bariques. The wine was aged in the same barriques for 29 months followed by 12 months in bottle prior to release.

Tasting Note: Made in limited quantities only, this rich and concentrated wine impressively combines firmness with roundness. Notes of rich coffee and fruitcake complement the elegant, fine tannins through to a rich and long finish.
