Dona Paula was founded in 1997 and produced its first vintage in 1999. All grapes used are estate-owned.The mother vineyard is at Ugarteche. According to Dona Paula’s renowned viticulturist, Edgardo Del Popolo, the soils here are deep and homogenous with a large amount of clay and some stones. Other vineyards at Tupungato, Gualtallary and Altamira each lend a unique climatic DNA to their grapes. Doña Paula is one of the few wineries in Argentina to employ cold soaks for better fruit extraction prior to fermentation. The technique of microxygenation is used primarily in the Paula range.
Viticulture: A blend of some of the best malbec blocks in the Uco Valley region. The yields in the old vineyards have not been managed so the crop level is naturally balanced by the vine itself. Blocks include some old high density planted vineyards with naturally low.
Vinification: Cold maceration before alcoholic fermentation in the Doña Paula style, seeking to preserve primary fruit aromas. Wild fermented by native yeasts at low temperatures and aged in 100% new French Taransaud barriques to 24 months. This wine is unfinned and unfiltered.
Tasting Note: Intense deep violet colour; clean aromas of dark forest berries, graphite notes, black cherry, mocha and spice box. Beautifully structured Malbec retaining elegance, finesse and multilayered complexity.
