For recent Rioja vintages, 2004 rivals the powerful, structured 2001 for quality, and both are comparable with 1994 and 1996, Rioja’s two best vintages of the 1990s. Both excellent vintages, 2004 and 2005 are a study in contrasts; the former has a brooding character, full of structure, acidity and firm, ripe tannins, a vintage with an Atlantic-climate character, while the latter is similar to how the 2005 Burgundies showed early on, all charming fruit, very easy to drink and appreciate, more of a Mediterranean-climate character, but exhibiting the ideal structural balance between tannins, alcohol and acidity to age extremely well.
